At Truk Island, along with the USS Iowa, she sank fleeing Japanese warships in the only surface combat conducted by the Iowa-class battleships. She played a role in every major amphibious invasion after 1943: The Marshall Islands, the Caroline Islands, the Marianas, New Guinea, the Palau Islands, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. She was fast, she was big, and she was a weapon of stunning power and accuracy. She would be awarded 19 Battle and Campaign Stars, second only to the 20 Battle and Campaign Stars awarded to the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise (CV-6), which the New Jersey often escorted in WWII. In WWII, she led the Pacific Fleet under Admirals Spruance and Halsey, fighting in two of the largest sea battles in history. Her motto was “Liberty and Prosperity.” After her commissioning, she would steam more miles, fight in more battles, and fire more shells than any other battleship in history. The “Big J,” as she is affectionately called, is one of four Iowa-class battleships built during WWII. She would even be brought up to serve in the Lebanon Crisis and in the Persian Gulf. She would fight with distinction through WWII and would again see action in both the Korean War and the Vietnam War. She was commissioned on December 7, 1942, the first anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. This noble old “battlewagon” has a truly glorious history that spans almost 80 years.
